New Here ,

I created a new shape with the pencil tool . But i want them to line up together instead of the light colour shape sticking out at the right.  I tried to use the join tool but there is no achor points near to join the darker shape to the lighter one.  Shape builder doesn't do anything either?   how do i join them so they look like one shape but 2 different colours?

You may want to stick out the darker green path an use a black object to cover the unwanted path and make it an opacity mask in the Transparency panel.

Like this, select both the dark green and the black object and click Make Mask.

Uncheck both Clip and Invert Mask.

And don't forget to click the left icon in the Opacity panel to get out of Mask editing mode.
