How to make path turn into two different paths

Here, I draw inner and outer shell (turtle). yet, the other path got connected to one of the inner lines. I use my mouse to mark the inner line.

Is there a way to get them separated and not one line ?

    Select the anchor where you want to separate them and click the scissors button in the control panel.

    To make this not happen at all: with the pen tool click some distance apart, and while the mouse is still down press the spacebar and move the point to its location.
