It seems like a pretty common and obvious thing for a user to want to do, select and move multiple artboards, yet for the life of me i can't see a way to do it.
Am i missing something?

I don't think so. I agree, it's a no-brainer, but AI does not offer that feature.

In essence, creating rectangles then "converting" them to artboards in "Artboard" mode may be the best option. You can then simply delete your original artboard(s).

In the most recent version of Illustrator you can select multiple artboards by drawing a marquee around them. First hit shift+O to bring up your artboard tool. Then hold shift to draw the marquee around the artboards that you want to move. Also if that doesn't work you can hold shift and click on them individually and then move them all at once. This is amazing!
