How to prevent the Curvature tool (AI CC) from editing existing paths?

Is there a way to prevent the Illustrator CC Curvature tool from editing existing paths when drawing nearby?

When I use the curvature tool near an unselected existing path, the existing path becomes selected. Then, the curvature tool changes to an "add anchor point" curvature tool and tries to add additional points to the existing path.

Short of locking down existing paths, how can I use the curvature without editing existing paths?

I just click as near as it will let me without changing, then keeping  the mouse held down, drag to the originally planned destination, then release.

Is there no other easy way to do this? I find it baffling.

Locking the other path or the layer?

The Curvature tool was meant to work like that in order to make it easy to edit paths. It was also meant to work on Touch devices.
