How to resize text area (box) without stretching text

Hi! I am editing a brochure in Illustrator CS4. There are text blocks. I want to make them the same width. But when I enter in the width I want... it stretches (or squishes up) the text. When I manually stretch out the text box, it works fine. But I can't get it exact doing it that way. Is there a way to enter in the width and NOT have the text distorted when the box is resized? Thanks.

You may Direct Select the path (white arrow).

Iin this case, you may ClickDrag the segment(s) you want to move.

Assuming it's a so-called AreaType object, or a so-called Type On A Path object, AltClick the edge of the textFrame or containing path with the white pointer. Then numerically enter the dimension.

If it's a so-called PointType object, turn on the proportional chainlink to constrain the proportion. Then numerically enter the dimension. (A PointType object has no containing rectangle, so changing its width without also changing its height distorts the type.)
