Question

How to screen record only artboard

Dear Community,

I would like to know how to screen record only the artboard, in Illustrator. My goal is to make a timelapse video of what happens on the artboard when I make elements visible one by one (I would start by having all the elements hidden).

P.S. I use Illustrator both on Windows and Mac.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes, I understand what you mean—recording the artboard like in Procreate. I once saw a video on YouTube showing how to record only the artboard using a plugin. But when I tried to find that video again, I couldn’t. Hahaha, stupid of me not to save it. What I remember from that video is that they downloaded a timelapse plugin for Illustrator, but it was in Chinese. The usage was really simple, with only two functions: record and stop.

Thanks all for your kind replies.

I have used the built-in recorder in the Mac to do that.

However, I find a bit confusing that Adobe Illustrator, in 2023, as no built-in function to record what happens in the artboard. That would be a very nice feature.

Pro tip:

If you have two monitors, then you can duplicate the project tab to the second monitor and record that. It keeps your artboard fixed without zooming in and out.

The screen recorders built into the current versions of both Windows and macOS let you select a specific area of the screen to record, so that’s one way to do it without having to install and learn other software. Drag your OS screen recorder’s selection rectangle around the artboard, then start the recording.

I don't know a screenrecording application that can focus the artboard automatically. You can either record a window or the complete screen or a fixed area on the screen. But when recording a fixed area, you would need to not zoom or pan so that the artboard stays where it is.
