How to select a group of objects using the layers panel?

Question

Sometimes I want to select multiple objects in the artboard that are more easily selected in the layers panel.

In the layers panel I can hold the shift key and add one object at a time to the selection. The selected object shows a small square indicator.

Is there a faster way to select multiple objects?

Although the layers panel allow multiple selection easily (click first object, hold shift, click last object), it does not translate to selection in the artboard. What is needed is a way to turn layers panel selection into artboard selection. Any ideas?

When you click on the object line, you select it just in the Layers panel. But when you click in the space right of the target circle, as Tromboniator suggests, you get the real selection, both on the Layers panel and the artboard. You will see small colored squares on the right side of the selected object lines on the panel.

And you can use here the same ways as you use in the file system: First-Shift-Last selects the range, First-Ctrl(Cmd)-Next allows a non-contiguous selection, and you can select a group just by clicking on the right side of the group line.

You can select multiple objects in the Layers panel by shift-clicking the targeting circles (toward the right side of the panel) of the first and last items. If you then want to deselect any of those items, shift-click to the right of the circle. You can also select individual items by clicking and/or shift-clicking to the right of the circle.
