How to split single artboard into two "pages"?

I am working on a booklet. Most of it will be two page spreads. But sometimes there will be two separate images on the spread: a right-hand and a left-hand image. How can I split the artboard for this?

I can fudge it by cutting off all objects at the center fold line. However, this messes with things that are feathered and makes them feather into the fold line. And don't even get me started on all the strokes I don't want running down the center.

Is there a way to make it so each side simply meets in the middle?

Thanks for your suggestions!

Will you also create the PDF out of Illustrator?

In that case: just make two artboards.

If I understand your question correctly, just use Clipping Masks, rather than actually cutting the image.
