How to stop cloud files auto saving on close

Everytime I open a cloud document and close it, illustrator auto saves it on closing.

Sometimes, I've opened a file and messed around. I don't want the changes saving, but illustrator keeps doing it and sometimes I lose things I don't want losing. How do I turn off this feature?

I totally agree and it is one of the reasons I do not use Cloud documents.

There is a feature request, there may be more.

Don't use cloud files directly and download them or simply use local files alltogether. AFAIK there is no way to turn off this convenience feature, which of course is how most users would want it to work, anyway.

It's 2024. Users have been complaining about this "feature" since at least 2018. It just ruined a PSD that i then had to reconstruct upon re-opening, wasting a valuable part of my workday. Most users want an application that doesn't ruin their documents if they make a destructive edit and then close it because they expect a save dialog to appear that gives them the option to close without saving. Now, I must remember to undo X number of changes before closing, which increases my cognitive overhead and also introduces an unnecessary number of required clicks before I can return the document to the state it was in before I opened it. ASTONISHINGLY BAD UI design.

Usability 101: users must have a safety net to avoid accidentally and irrevocably commiting changes to a file before they close it.

I like messing around too, therefore I disabled the Preferences > File Handling > Automatically Save Cloud Documents Every xxx minutes. But that does not stop Illustrator from saving when closing the document.

If you like versions and backups of your work and want to keep the control over when it is saved, use the CC files folder:
