How to trim a line shape from another shape?

So I understand that if I have two shapes on top of each other, and I select both of them with the direct selection tool, then go to pathfinder panel, and click trim (and then ungroup them), this will essentially cut the shape of the top object out from the bottom object.

This works perfectly, but not for lines - so if I have a curved line, say with a 10pt stroke (no fill) on top of a rectangle, and do the same process as above (trim) - the line just disappears and does not "cut" out the line shape from the rectangle.

What is the solution for cutting out a curved lines shape from another object? (thanks!)

If you want to cut through a shape with the line, try Object > Path > Divide objects below

If you also want to subtract the stroke width, then you need to first outline the stroke, then subtract using the pathfinder panel.
