Question

How to use effects only on fill

I'm trying to use effects only on the fill in my image so that stroke isn't grainy with angled strokes like the fill. The image is also 3D, and whenever I attempt to only use effects in the fill, a grey box appears around the whole image. Can anyone help?

The gray box is the result of using an image effect like grain on a fill and trying to extrude the image.

Your fill is a gradient, which will be rasterized anyway (as the3D dialog options tell you).

The best you can do is to apply the grain effect after the 3D effect is used and after expanding the appearance.

After Object > Expand Appearance, go to the Links panel and select a rasterized fill image.

Click the Go to Link button and apply the Grain effect.

Repeat for the other rasterized gradient fills.

Certainly I will take a look at it tomorrow. Unfortunately, right now it is time for me to go to bed.

In the meantime I am sure that some other participants may provide useful advice.

Thank you so much! I saw that you helped someone else out with this a few years back, but their solution was to drop the additional effects. There has to be a way to use multiple effects with the 3D effect and not have that horrendous grey box surrounding it.

You may upload the file to some file sharing provider (e. g. Google Drive or the Adobe Cloud storage) and post a public download link.

Let me know if that works. I'm working on artboard 2, and I like how it looks at the moment with the 3d and gradient I have. My goal is adding a film grain and angled strokes over just the fill of the text so the strokes will be intact. If you can help I would massively appreiciate it!!!

Thanks for the screenshot.

For further investigation it would tremendously help if you could share the original Illustrator file (.ai).

I'm working on Artboard 2, and it definitely has something to do with using 3D, but I'm still working on it. For whatever reason using 3d and adding effects makes a grey box appear around the layer. I can't figure out why.

And it's not letting me post the .ai file on here.

Can you share this sample Illustrator file?

If not, can you try to turn on the CPU preview in the View menu in order to check if it may just be a preview glitch?

I tried the CPU, but nothing changed. Not sure how to get around this so I can keep the strokes sharp and intact without getting all grainy and losing information on the stroke.

Which version of Illustrator are you using?

In general, you will have to use the Appearance palette in order to control if some appearances (effects) are applied to fills or strokes.

I'm using the most current Illustrator. So I colored my text and used the 3D effect. I'm trying to add grain and angled strokes to fill, but when I add it to just the fill in the appearance window a grey box surrounds my letter. Not sure how to get around that.
