How-To Write on the margin of a circle without outline of the circle under the text

How do you not have the outline of the circle behind the letters?

I drew a circle --> copied it --> locked the first layer --> typed on the path of the second layer --> centred it -->set path's baseline to centre.

I would appreciate your advice.

I drew a circle. Then copied it. Created a new layer and pasted the circle. I then locked the first layer. 

On the second layer, I 'Typed on path'. Thereafter, I centred and moved the baseline of the text to the centre.

Created a circle and made a copy on a layer below it.
Put text on a path and positioned it to the path center.

Set the black fill of the text to None.

Added a black fill in the Appearance panel
Added a thick white stroke in the Appearance panel and dragged it below the fill.

Set the opacity of the white stroke to 0%

Selected both the text on path and the path below it and made it a Group.
Checked in the Opacity of the Group the Knockout Group to make it transparent.

I see the logic of the steps.

Where I am hit a wall is when I try to drag the stroke of the text below that of the fill of the text. This just would not happen. When I drag the stroke below the fill, it jumps back up.

I wonder where I am going wrong here.

Did you first remove the fill when the characters were selected (with the Type tool)?

Does your Appearance panel look exactly as in my screendump?

Thanks, type can have 2 kinds of fill and stroke, one for the (individual) characters and one for the type object.

You need to remove the character fill and add them to the type object.

Around 2:14 you put the fill back to the characters.
After removing the Fill from the Characters, just select the Selection tool instead of the Type tool and add the fill to the Type object.

Hello Ton,

I modified your method. It works for my requirements.

1. On the first layer. --> draw a circle

2. Copy the circle

3. add a new layer (layer 2)

4. Paste the circle 'in front' on layer 2

5. Lock the layer 1

6. On layer 2, 'type on the path'  --> centre align --> centre on the path 

7. Select the text --> remove fill

8. selective now with the selection tool

7. Open the 'Appearance' pallete

8. Change the type fill to black

9. Change the character fill to White; increase the size to a large number e.g. 15

10. Then move the 'stroke' below the 'fill' in the 'Appearance' pane

11. Done

That works as long as you use it on a white background (or a background with the same stroke color).
