Question

HP Stylus not registering and glitching on Illustrator (and only illustrator)

As seen in the attached video (not sure if attachment worked), when I use my HP stylus on Adobe Illustrator my stylus is frequently not registered and nothing is drawn. You can see in the video that the lines stop appearing even when I am tracing my stylus across the page and the cursor from the stlyus does not follow. Also at the end when drawing the alphabet less than half the letters come out. This issue has made it essentially impossible to draw things as I need to redo/trace lines about 3-5 times before they come out clearly.

This issue only occurs on Adobe Illustrator and even happens on the select tool, eraser, etc.

Thank you.

side note- when using the default pen option, the lines come out consistently but they dissapear as soon as I release my pen. When using any other pen the line stays but the above issues often happens.

Hi @levi_5568,

Thanks for the update and for confirming those details. Could you please confirm if you've already uninstalled and reinstalled the stylus drivers? If yes, and the issue still persists, try uninstalling the 'HID-compliant pen' from Device Manager and restart your system to let Windows reinstall it automatically.

Next, open Illustrator and toggle the GPU Performance setting (under Preferences > Performance) off and on to see if there's any difference in how the stylus responds. If the issue continues, open Task Manager > Startup apps and check if 'HP Pen Control' appears in the list. If it does, try disabling it from startup and test again.

Please share your observations after these checks, so I can review this further with the team.

Looking forward to your update.

Abhishek

Hello, I have done all of the above but the issue is still persisting and I am now noticing that sometimes the pen is slightly out of sync. Lowering GPU settings seemed to help potentially but the issue is still quiet apparent.

Thanks for the support,

Levi

I am currently on Illustrator 30.0, but the issue is there on all versions. I have done all updates. I am currently on Windows Version 10.0.22631. The stylus I am using is the HP Slim Rechargable Pen (HP Slim Rechargeable Pen).

I have turned off Windows Ink but the issue is still there and I'm not sure if there was much of an effect.

Thank you.

Hi @levi_5568,

Thanks for sharing the details and the video. Could you please confirm which version of Illustrator and Windows you're using, along with the exact HP stylus model?

Please try disabling or enabling Windows Ink for your stylus and then test again. To do this in Windows 11, right-click the Start button and open Settings, go to Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink, and toggle Windows Ink off for your device. After that, reinstall your stylus drivers to ensure everything's updated and properly configured.

If the issue still persists, please share what you notice after testing these steps, so I can look into it further.

Looking forward to your update.

Abhishek

I have since turned off Windows Ink but the issue is still there and I'm not sure if there was much of an effect. Thank you for the assistance.
