I believe my answer will help your problem, which i think the issue was caused by 'scratch disks' settings

To be short,

1.Open Adobe Illustrator

2.Go to 'Edit' > 'Preferences' > 'Plug-ins & Scratch disks'

3.You'll probably find your 'Scratch disks' settings be like this

4.Adjust secondary disk into something that would be it, press 'OK' and everything will be fine. (I changed it into drive-D for the secondary disk)

My computer has 32G RAM, and the image I was placing/drag&drop were just some normal JPGs sizing under like 3M only, but I had the exact same problem as you did. And of course it has nothing to do with embedding and linking problems since the image is just not showing a right preview on the screen.

Not pretty sure why this is happening, but I assume that it is your seperate hard drives that causes error. I use my drive-C (SSD) for app install and running, drive-D(HHD) for archiving.

* Plus, the problem occurred only when i installed the English version of illustrator, but was doing so fine whenever I uninstall it, and reinstall into Korean version(Country that my account belongs to), without toggling any setting I mentioned above.

Hope it helps anybody who's suffering from the same problem 😞

1. 'Edit' > 'Preferences' > 'Plug-ins & Scratch disks' (한글버전이 이미 아니고, 한글버전 명령어가 익숙치 않아서 이렇게 쓸게요 이해부탁드립니다)

This worked for me! I was trying to drag in a JPG into Ilustrator CC 2020, and all that would show up was an empty frame. I had dragged in JPGs before, but I think this was the first time I had tried it since updating to 2020. Thank you so much for sharing your solution!
