I can't select small text any more.

Hi all
I have a layout where iI have to change a lot of text sections. As I have to have the whole layout visible I need to stay zoomed out (and want to stay zoomed out). I can't double click to get the type tool engaged. It just wants to select the sizing handles. When I do double click it will re-size or squash the text. This has been a problem in CC but now it's getting unuseable.
It was always easy in  CS6 so I've had to fire up CS6 to continue working.

Do I have a setting wrong here?

I really don't want to zoom in and out, I have over 300 individual pieces of text to edit spread over half of the canvas area.

I need to edit the text withoout illustrator sellecting the control handles.  It's almost like I need to adjust some sort of resolution or proximity. In CS6 I can get closer to the object without it selecting it, thus I have more control whether I want the control points selected or not.
Maybe I'm not explaining my issue correctly

is the bounding box display turned on? If so, I'd turn that off (see View menu).

As far as I can see, at least some of the issues you are describing should be solved, even if the view is extremely zoomed out.

I still want the bounding box, but I did (thanks to your reference) delve into Preferences.
I turned off "Highlight anchors on mouse over" (Pref>Selection...) and that did it!

See if Preferences > Type > Type Object Selection by Path Only is checked, and if so, uncheck it and see if that helps.

In the meantime, you could just hit "T" and that will allow you to directly click a cursor in your text and edit without double-clicking

As Met1 advised, open a second view of the artboard (Window > New). Then use the Arrange Windows buttons on the Control bar to tile the two views. Stay zoomed out on one, and zoom in (and work) on the other. Your work will happen in both simultaneously. If I understand your reluctance to zoom, having the Navigator panel on the screen will help even more with the 2-view method.

As Kurt Gold suggested, turning off the Bounding Box will negate the possibility of inadvertently grabbing handles. And, as Brad @ Roaring Mouse suggested, don't double-click; just tap the T key first, then click your text object once and edit.

Met1's trick was slightly different, but I'd never seen the "Arrange Windows" button (only been using Illustrator since about 1995). Just had a go with that.... really cool.
