I often click on some thing and it brings a blue, white and grey cube in a circle with a + sign in the top right hand corner of the screen `and ` net over my work,

What am I doing and how do I get rid of it???

It is the perspective grid widget (and the grid itself). Click on the little 'x' to get rid of it (if you still have the perspective grid tool selected), or go to View > Perspective Grid > Hide Grid.

Or perhaps you might decide to learn how to use it:

It's not that great a tool, but there are situations where it can be useful.

It'll only close with the little X if you have the perspective grid tool or the perspective selection tool active.
