If this is a raster logo, and all in black, you could set its transparency mode to Multiply.

to change the font, use a clipping mask to remove the existing text, and retype the name using your new font.

Not sure what you tried so far, but the entire logo can be redrawn. If the logo is a bitmap ( raster file as already mentioned ), "place" it on a Layer. Create another Layer as your draw layer. Even the "A" can be drawn, if you do not have the font ( or use a new font as you've mentioned in your post ). The artwork surrounding the "A" is a repeat of any of the four sections, so draw one and duplicate for the other three. Then, as already suggested, type in your name in whatever font you'd like. When you are done, you will have a transparent, Black and White version of your logo in vector format. That said, there should be a vector original of that logo floating around somewhere. Can you get your hands on it?
