A tip: many pro fonts have a short code giving the font owner eg MT-Monotype BT-Bitstream LT-Linotype. Such fonts will almost never be free but pirate sites may trick you into installing them without rights.

Often free fonts will not be complete font algorythms, so while they look fine onscreen, they print terribly.

I'd like to note that back in the day it was considered Standard Industry Practice for clients to include fonts with their art when printing. It's only been recently that "Big Font" (lol) has been pushing the Intellectual Property Law in the direction of calling this UNfair Use. Therefore, our company requires all text to be outlined. That is a MAJOR pain in the ass for the Art Department though because "what if there is a minor text change?" Either we get to "build" the words one outlined letter at a time (assuming I have all the right letters to do so), or ask the customer to make the change and resend the art or section of art (delay). Finally, the cost for having ANY illegal copy of a font on your computer without proof of ownership is $5,000 per font (not per family). Ex: Having an unowned copy of the Helvetica family can cost you around $2,000,000 in fines alone.

So the greed of the Font companies have changed the Fair Usage standard of fonts in our industry.

This causes us to either heavily invest or use a work around, making our work more expensive (time = money).

If a customer sends us a font to fix a single period or letter, we aren't allowed to use it.

Finally, the punishment is incredibly excessive.

This needs to be fixed.
