Illustrator 2019 freezing on MAC

Getting very annoyed. I’m using a 5K iMac with 32Gb RAM. Illustrator 23.0.6 loads and works for around 5 min or so then completely freezes. No crash report. I cannot access anything on my Mac. The brush tool moves around but I just cannot access anything. If a video is playing it will continue to play (but cannot be turned off).

As far as I can tell, only Illustrator is doing this (No problems with PS or LR).

Any ideas why this is happening?

Hi Eliot,

We are sorry to hear about this. I am hopeful the the issue is resolved by the suggestions shared above. If not, I would request if you can share a few more details like:

  • Operating System
  • Is the issue related to a specific document(s)/asset(s)? If yes, could you please share the document(s)/asset(s) with us? You can upload it to the creative cloud and share the download link.
  • Where the files are saved (Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System /External HDD)?
When did this start happening? Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates or web extensions installed recently.
  • Does resetting Illustrator Preferences (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/illustrator/using/setting-preferences.html) help resolve the issue?

Please note that resetting preferences will remove all the custom settings and Illustrator will launch with default settings. You can also take a backup of the folders in case you want to. Location is mentioned in the article.

Regards,

Srishti

Hi, try uninstalling and installing Adobe Illustrator again. I suggest you use Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to uninstall the software and remove any corrupt files.

WHich other software is running?

What exactly are you doing when that happens?

Is the dictation turned off in your system?

Is iCloud running?

Where are your files located?

Sounds like something is missing from the install, or some sort of conflict that is probably tied to RAM or CPU/GPU. I'd honestly try using the adobe app manager from CC to uninstall the program. Then redownload and do a fresh install of Illustrator and see if the problem persists. With that powerful a machine it shouldn't take too long. That will confirm at least if it was the install or if there is something else going on.
