Illustrator 2019 won't open files from windows explorer

I'm using Illustrator on a PC. When I try and open a file from windows exploror, Illustrator will show it is processing something but then stops and doesn't open the file. I can only open files by going to File/Open in the drop down menu. Very frustrating.

Hi Hylton,

 

Sorry to hear about the trouble you are facing with Illustrator while opening files from Explorer. I would request if you can share a few more details like:

  • What happens if you right click and select open with Illustrator?
  • Which the default application is assigned to Ai files? Make sure it is set to Illustrator.
  • When did this start happening? Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates or web extensions installed recently.
