Illustrator 2020 copy paste in chosen layer

After updating from Illustrator 2019 to Illustrator 2020 the copy-paste function has changed.

Previously in illustrator 2019:

1) Choose the item

2) hit Ctrl+C

3) Choose the layer you want the item to be pasted

4) hit Ctrl + V

Result = The item is pasted to layer you chosen.

Now in illustrator 2020:

1) Choose the item

2) hit Ctrl + C

3) Choose the layer you want the uten to be pasted

4) hit Ctrl + V

Result = The item is pasted next to the old item in the old layer so in other words in layer you no loger are.

While this may be logical, it makes the workflow much slower because you have to drag the item to the right place in the layer tree.

I'm trying to understand why user can no longer choose the paste layer. Is Illustrator trying to make users use the isolation mode or something?

The isolation mode kind of works, but the illustrator thinks the pasted item and the one in the isolation mode are compound path.

What am I missing here? Have you come across how to copy + paste smart way in Illustrator 2020?

Hi, Uncheck “Paste Remembers Layers” in the Layers panel options.

Created two documents.

First Document:

  1. Create Text block
  2. Create Rectangle

Ctrl+C with Text Block and Ctrl+V in Second Document and it pastes the Text into the docment.

Ctrl+C with Rectangle and Ctrl+V in Second Document and nothing.

I have Unchecked 'Paste Remembers Layers' in the Layers panel

Cannot get this to work?

Recently, I have the same issue. I am using Illustrator v 24.1.2

Any solution for this?

Thanks everybody, I realize that I was mistaking groups for layers. It does work for layers. What I really wanted was 'paste into a group' and 'do not remember group' with whatever keyboard shortcut it is out there. It is not exactly same as working in the mask mode (object within object). Ton can you delete my first comment.

If you double click a group, you will go into isolation mode. If you paste you will paste into the group as you will see if you exit Isolation mode.

^Right. The behavior hasn't changed.

Your description is what happens with Paste Remembers Layers enabled. With it disabled, your pasted content should go to the currently active layer. If that's not the case, you may need a reset of preferences.
