Illustrator 2020 crashing while Printing files on macOS Catalina

Illustrator is crashing when I go to click print in the print dialog box. I have even tried creating a blank page with no graphics, still it crashes.

I have tried this in both RGB and CMYK color modes.

I have tried resetting preferences.

I have tried unchecking CPU performance.

This is a new problem, previously has been working and problem occurred previous to latest update of Mac OS.

Illustrator v. 24.0.3

iMac OS 10.15.3

Has it also worked in Catalina? And that message you quote sounds like some Catalina security warning.

Hi, thanks for coming back.

Yes has been working in Catalina. Funnily I haven't had the crashing problem on print for the last two files I've created. I've not consciously done any thing different. The one I'm working on today is very complicated with various colours chosen form the color picker panel. Prints with no issues. I'll post if it happens again and try to isolate circumstances.

Did you set up the printer? get the latest printer driver that fits your system?

After updating the system this usually needs to be done.

Printer driver is up to date (see above). Have had the printer for some years and it has always worked fine in illustrator.

Hi Tim,

Sorry to hear about the crashing. I understand that's really frustrating. Could you please share a few more details like:

  • Name and model number of the printer?
  • What happens when you export the document to PDF and then Print from Acrobat?
  • Try printing the file to Adobe PDF or Adobe PostScript File and let us know how it goes.

Regards,

Srishti

Printer is Canon pixma, iX6550, driver version 16.40.1.0

Exporting as PDF out of illustrator is fine.

Printing the file to postscript file is the only option. A message pops up 'Are you sure that this file is from a trustworthy source and you want to convert it?' which is strange. This is then converted through Distiller before opening in Acrobat, where it can be printed in the normal way.
