Illustrator 2020 freezes when uniting a shape's blend

I've created drop shadows for text. I can expand the blended shadows however when I go to unite it into one shape, illustrator freezes with the "apply add filter illustrator progress bar." How can I improve performance? Or is this a bug?

How many steps is your blend? Could it be it is just very complex? An alternative for 3D shadow when you make a blend is to select the shapes you want to blend, rasterize them and then use Image Trace. In some cases it gives a better result and faster.
