Illustrator 23.0.4 crashes when packaging files on both Windows/MAC

macOS 10.14.5 or Windows 10 (the same problem on both platform)

Photoshop CC 2019 20.0.5

Illustrator CC 2019 23.0.4

I create a file in Photoshop with 4 colors (ink names Printing white, SKU, Orange, Black). Save as EPS DCS 2.0 TIFF Preview Single File with Composite Preview.

In the illustrator create a new document. Delete all swatches. Link the resulting EPS. Save. Trying to create packaging.

Crash.

DSC files are really old, and do bot support many functions. I do not have an answer but have experimented with using standard RGB and/or CMYK files with white or transparent area (or all layers hidden), but with extra Spot Channels. I find this superior since it allows me to keep smart objects, layers etc. As soon as you remove a channel it becomes multichannel which makes it not supported to place… but why remove the channels, just keep them empty. (this also means I can place the PSD in indesign or Illustrator)

TIFF is really old format too. Even older than DCS. But it is very usable today.

Problem in printing house, which give us the technical requirements for files. They want only DCS files when raster multicolor images need to be printed.

They probably operate with the philosophy "if it ain't broke (by me) don't fix it". Yes tiffs are great, too. Try talking to them. Being able to have smart objects live text and various parts of the work process stored such as adjustment layers in the same file as the one for production should weigh heavily… it is packaging and flexography?

    Hi Firsikov,

Sorry to hear that Illustrator is crashing while packaging the file. Let us make this right for you. I would request if you can share a few more details like:

    • Is the issue specific to this particular file or all the files which are created by this workflow?
    • If yes, we need to check which part of the packaging is failing. Packaging basically does these three things:
    1. Copy links.
    2. Copy Fonts.
    3. Create Report.

    • To confirm which action is failing, please uncheck these options one by one and let us know in which case you were able to package the file without crashing.

    Looking forward to your response!

    Regards,

    Srishti

    Hello, Srishti

I can reproduce that situation from a scratch.

For example i create the test file for answer to your post.

    It's a multichannel file with 300 dpi. I saved it as a EPS 2.0

Next step, i created a new document in the illustrator. Deleted all swatches and placed the test file. Trying to create package.

    And… Boom!

Any folder was created. Any report… !

Here i attached my test files: link to cloud
