Illustrator 27.8.1 is "Unable Export SVG Files"

I've been doing this same exact process for over a dedace without any problems whatsoever. Suddenly, today I keep getting an error message saying that Adobe Illustrator is "unable to export the following files". I'm just trying to run a batch export to SVG on 24 artboards containing very simple logos. What changed? This has never een an issue before...

Correct answer cepheide

The problem is gone for me. Maybe I applied an update that was fixing the bug.

the unable to export SVG files problem just became my problem after an “AUTO UPDATE” of Illustrator that i DID NOT WANT TO UPDATE…  I've been saving these SVG files for 10 years, multiple ways, and have NEVER EVER encountered a problem.  I’m certain this is an Adobe problem and every single workaround that I have tried..  Save as..  export as..  export selection..  updating my Illustrator..  updating my Creative Cloud….   ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WORKS as this is a bug in the Illustrator code, not us 25+ year users.   This is completely frustrating and I can not get my work done with this cloud software we pay thousands of dollars a month to use.

Never count out Adobe to screw something up that was working just fine.

Sincerely,

CAN NOT GET MY WORK DONE because you need to update Illustrator 516 times a year.

Hi @Johnny too fast I’m now getting this problem. I see 4 days isn’t a whole lot of time for a suggested fix but did you happen to find a workaround or fix within that time? Very frustrating

@Johnny too fast nevermidn just saw there’s an update available that has seemed to fix it!

I'm on version 29.8.1 and the same thing is happening to me, Unable to export SVGs no matter the settings or export method.

Did you ever figure anything out?  Because I have literally changed ever export setting, every save location, every single thing the Adobe team has suggested but really has no clue at all what is going on or causing this..   They just suggest, suggest, suggest, a bunch of stuff that never works..   25+ years of these “suggestions” from The Adobe Team that NEVER EVER EVER WORK.

I had the same problem and I solved it. Do this:
1) Close Adobe illustrator
2) Update Adobe Illustrator within Creative Cloud
3) Open Illustrator

4) Export your file using File> Export > Export for screens > Choose "SVG"

5) Done!

I hope it helps you. 🙏

I don't have the option to run Illustrator under another account. I'm the only one with Admin status and the only one with Illustrator installed on a machine at my company under the same plan.

I've tried other folders that are local vs cloud like (DropBox & OneDrive), It seems to work if it's exported locally. However, this is not ideal for my workflow at all.   Is there a setting on DropBox that has changed, not accepting SVG files, or is there something I can do within Illustrator to get them exported directly to my DropBox folders?  I cannot change my pre-paid work-flow and move away from DropBox, this would cause too many issues with an entire matrix of connections, not to mention the time consumption moving things to another location.

On another note, Illustrator is not recalling the latest files I had open, the top one from the "Recents" list skips to 3 days ago, nothing from yesterday or even most recently this morning, very odd!

Hello @savagequest,

Illustrator supports working across networks, removable media, and cloud-synced folders (Google Drive / Dropbox / OneDrive, etc.) and is vigorously tested across multiple configurations. However, not all configurations, including different software, hardware, settings, and access rights, have been tested. Therefore, your configuration can cause errors, crashes, or unexpected behavior. You may learn more about this here: (https://adobe.ly/4mwoU7x).

To avoid such problems, we recommend working on your files from a local directory, like the Desktop, and manually copying them to the removable media, network drive, cloud-synced folder, or using Cloud Documents.

Feel free to reach out if you have more questions or need assistance. We'd be happy to help.

Having the same issue in 29.5.1 on Mac with macOS 15.5
Tried different locations as well as super simple file with 1 artbord and one rectangle — tried just about every setting for the svg file, still unable to export.

Hello @c.kurtz,

Could you try running Illustrator under a different administrator account (macOS) and checking if it helps? If the problem persists, kindly share a link to a sample file, and share a small screen recording of your exact export workflow and the problem, so I can better assist you.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello @digital@iit,

I am sorry to hear about your experience. Would you mind trying to run Illustrator under Safe Mode (Windows / macOS) and checking if it helps? Also, try running Illustrator under a different administrator account (Windows / macOS) and share your observations.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

Anubhav

Hello @gregl17660213,

We understand how frustrating it can be to encounter technical issues. Would you mind checking if the file/export location is on an external/network drive or a cloud-synced folder (Dropbox / Google Drive, iCloud Drive, etc.)? If yes, kindly try moving the file / changing the export location to a folder on the internal hard drive, like the desktop, and checking if it helps.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

Anubhav

Hello and thank you for reaching out Anubhav,

I discovered two work arounds (although both seem a little bizarre considering this has never been an issue before).

1. Exporting the 24 artboards to two batches of 12 prevented the error

2. Converting all text elements to outlines allowed all 24 artboards to be exported (even though the SVG export setting are supposed to do that automatically). it's possible that the error could have been related to this text to outlines conversion. Hope that helps.

Hello @gregl17660213,

Thanks for confirming that. Kindly share a sample file (https://community.adobe.com/t5/illustrator-discussions/share-your-files-in-6-simple-steps/td-p/12967531) and screenshots of the export settings if the problem reoccurs so we can investigate further.

Thanks,

Anubhav
