Illustrator (28.4.1) GPU Preview keeps on breaking constantly

Hello community,

This bug is becoming the most frustrating thing that has ever happened to Illustrator for many many years.

It's that simple, one on every two times I launch Illustrator the GPU preview is broken. I have updated Windows 11 Pro and updated both graphic cards on my laptop, and it keeps breaking and breaking... I even refreshed all my settings, and it keeps doing it.

How come this lingers around for so many years?
How come there is no warning or no workaround to prevent or fix this issue before it happens or knowing that it has happened?
How come the CPU preview is still a thing?
So many questions... still no answers nor solutions.

System:

Windows 11 Pro - Version 23H2 - OS build 22631.3447

Graphic:
NVIDIA RTX 3500 Ada Generation Laptop GPU 551.86 - up-to-date
Intel UHD Graphics - up-to-date

If anyone knows what is happening... thanks!

The GPU preview breaks constantly, sometimes it breaks after the computer goes to sleep. Restarting Illustrator, or the computer sometimes does not fix this. It is a very random behaviour...

Even after doing a clean reinstallation of the GPU drivers, Illustrator keeps crashing on this function. On any other software, it works fine, its just Illustrator that keeps breaking and breaking over and over again.

When it seems to work, the zoom function flickers, and closing and restarting Illustrator does not fix this. It is a total gamble any time.

As visible in this screenshot, the CPU preview is activated, but I can't even see the option to go back to GPU preview in the menu panel, it's just gone.

This looks like an Illustrator bug with Nvidia drivers, on other software it works fine.

Hello @StudioOedipus,

We understand how frustrating it can be to encounter crashes in the middle of work. Would you mind trying the suggestions shared in this help article (https://adobe.ly/3Q1X8CG) and checking if it helps?

Also, try running Illustrator under a different administrator account (Windows / macOS) and checking if it helps, and submit the crash report using your Adobe email address and share it here for quick tracking. Steps are shared here: (https://adobe.ly/4cREzuL). We appreciate your time and patience in helping us resolve this issue.

Thanks,
Anubhav

Hello Anubhav,

Thanks for reacting and sharing some solutions. Unfortunately, the issue is recurring even after updating my NVIDIA GPU and Intel CPU/GPU. Even after ensuring through the Windows Graphics settings, that all Adobe software runs using the GPU max performances.

It was stable for 2 days, now it is buggy again. Since there are no signs that it crashes, or that it will do it, the only option left is to restart the laptop and pray that it may work... A 'solution' that is not enjoyable.

Is there a way to report to Adobe that something is happening on the NVIDIA RTX 3500 Ada Generation Laptop driver?

@StudioOedipus, I'm sorry to hear that you're still experiencing issues despite trying various solutions. Let's try some optimization techniques to see if they help improve Illustrator's performance with your NVIDIA RTX 3500 Ada Generation Laptop GPU.

Please follow the steps outlined in this video, especially focusing on optimizing NVIDIA settings: https://adobe.ly/4aLM7h4. Sometimes, adjusting specific settings in the NVIDIA control panel can improve performance and stability.

Additionally, if Illustrator crashes, please submit the crash report using your Adobe email address. This will help us track and investigate the issue more effectively.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation in resolving this matter. Let us know if you need further assistance or if you have any other questions.

Best regards,

Anshul Saini

Read my mind! RTX 2080Ti tried all sorts of Nvidia drivers, to no avail. Just crappy crashes. Imagine delivering artwork that disappeared when a client received it, or animations that stopped playing, IMAGINE. But Adobe gets their subscription fee every month, even with software that DOES NOT WORK. Bullying. CPU mode is ridiculous, to the point of worthless. Only GPU mode can handle my client files. WHAT GIVES ADOBE? Please respond with an immediate fix to Adobe Illustrator and spare us any excuses.

"CPU mode is ridiculous, to the point of worthless"

Quite the opposite. Everything that is done in Illustrator (or any similar program) is done using the CPU. GPU preview is utilized ONLY to render the results faster to the screen than the CPU would be able to do natively, assuming it's compatible, of course. In no way does using one or the other change the contents of the file.

Hi @davidd67983506

I understand how frustrating this can be, but I'm here to help. Could you please provide more details about the issue? Does it crash randomly, or does it happen after a specific action or when using a particular feature? Is the problem occurring with a specific file? If you could share the crash report, it would greatly help us in starting the investigation.

Regards,

Srishti
