Illustrator 28 not displaying an embedded image correctly

I have an embeded grayscale image set to 15% opacity and multiply.

In Illustrator 28.1 this embedded image displays much lighter than if it is linked with the same settings.

if I output a PDF from this file, the embeded image looks like the linked image on the PDF.

In Illustrator 27.9.1 the embeded image looks like the linked image.

It seems as though this is only affecting the way the embedded image is displayed in Illustrator 28.

Illustrator 28.1

Looks like a bug. Different, but similar regarding the behaviour of greyscale images that are linked vs embedded in a pdf:

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.
