illustrator 29.7.1 – kerning and preference shortcut suddenly missing

Hi there,

I’ve noticed two major workflow issues in Illustrator 29.7.1 and had to downgrade to 29.6.1:

  • Please restore text kerning with [Alt + Left/Right] in text fields.
  • Please restore the steps per keyboard highlight when opening Preferences with [Ctrl + K]

These changes disrupt established workflows for many long-time users.
Thanks.

Same. I updated a couple days ago as well (29.7.1), and immediately noticed the keyboard shortcuts for type size/kerning/leading were broken. Updated to the latest tonight (29.8.1) and no better.

Massive hinrdrance to workflow.

Update to the latest version and if the preferences are not reset, change the type settings in Preferences.

Found the answer in this thread. After the update, Type increments in preferences were automatically set to:

Size/Leading 0.1pt

Tracking 0pt

Baseline Shift 0.1pt

Updated to my preferred increments and seems to fix. Annoying, and lost half a day's work trying to update/reinstall/etc.

Hi @nwmd and everyone,

Thank you for sharing your experience. I just tested the Alt + Arrow keys in the latest 29.7.1, and they behave the same as in version 28.7.8. For more clarity, could you please share a short screen recording showing the behavior you see on your end? Regarding the Ctrl + K functionality, please check this thread which has the latest update on that topic: https://adobe.ly/478Dqi2.

Looking forward to your update.

adobe's new KPI seems to be regressions per release. how are we supposed to support the rising cost of software when features that have been around for 20 years are suddenly changing? this is the difference between profesional and hobby work 🥲

Hi,
Fellow user here. by "steps per keyboard", do you mean the "Keyboard Increment" sometimes known as the nudge?
If so, I find the change very aggrivating. It totally inturrupts my workflow.
Thanks,
F
