Illustrator Application Frame bugs

In the latest update, 22.1, I can´t use Application Frame.

Application Frame hides all documents and I can't access them any way. Also, the keyboard shortcust stops working.

Is this a bug?

This has been happening to me in both illustrator and photoshop for at least 2 - 3 versions. It has happened repeatedly on 3 separate computers and now just happened to me on a a brand new work computer which is why im posting here. Resetting preferences does nothing in either scenario. The only way around it is to turn off application frame. Re-enabling application frame just hides everything again. Feels like another bug to me.

Just to upset Bill  bit more, you can add me to the list of sufferers!

I like using the application frame as it keeps it all linked, but mines not working either on CC2019 23.0.2 and Mac High Sierra.

I will try trashing the prefs as suggested.

Just as an update...nope prefs trashing did nothing useful.

My Application Frame has been working again. I haven't been able to isolate what happened.

This is definitely a BUG in Illustrator CC 2018. If you double-click on a file in the Mac finder to open it, and Illustrator is not already open, the file will open BEHIND the application frame.

I just upgraded to the most recent version 23.0.2 thinking it would solve this bug, and IT'S ACTUALLY WORSE.

In previous versions, I could use the menu command ARRANGE >FLOAT ALL IN WINDOWS then ARRANGE > CONSOLIDATE ALL WINDOWS to make the documents appear in front of the application frame. That no longer works.

It seems to only way to make the application frame go into its proper location is to uncheck it in the WINDOW > APPLICATION FRAME menu command, then re-check it to re-enable it.

Restarting and/or resetting Prefs does not solve the issue.

**SIGH** Adobe please fix your stuff BEFORE you add new features that nobody needs or cares about. This has been going on for several years/versions.

If this were indeed a bug then the forum would be inundated with posts about it especially since, as you say, it's been going on for you over two different versions of the program. It sounds like a problem that is usually caused, as Monika said in her post, by a corrupt preference file which you have carried over between versions. Try trashing your preferences and see if the problem persists.

To do so:

For Macintosh Users: The User Library folder in which Illustrator’s preferences are stored is hidden by default on most Macintoshes. To access it make sure that Illustrator is closed and click on the desktop to launch a Finder Window (Command-N).With this window in column view follow the path User>Home folder (it’s the folder with an icon that looks like a house—it may have the user’s name rather than “Home”) and click on the Home folder. With the Option Key pressed choose Library from the Finder Go Menu. “Library” will now appear within the Home folder. Within the Library folder find the folder called Preferences and within it find the folder called “Adobe Illustrator <Version #> Settings” (earlier versions of Illustrator might just say “Adobe Illustrator”) and the file called “com.adobe.Illustrator.plist” and delete both that folder and that file. When Illustrator is next launched it will create new preference files and the program will be restored to its defaults.

For Windows Users: You can try the quick way of resetting on a PC which is to hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift when launching Illustrator and respond affirmatively when asked if you want to reset. There have been some recent reports that the window asking if you want to reset is not popping up but that the prefs are being reset anyway. If this works great but if it doesn’t you may have to manually delete them.

To do so:

On Windows 7 and above the preference files are hidden. To find them go to the Control Panel and open Folder Options and then click the View tab. Then select “Show hidden files and folders” or “Show hidden files, folders or drive options” in Advanced Settings. Then delete (or rename) the folder at the end of this path: C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator [version number]\ Settings\<Language>. Make sure that Illustrator is closed when you do this. When you relaunch the program it will create  new preference files and the program will be at its default settings.

The advantage of manually deleting preference files is that after you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, you can create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.

Hi Bill,

This has just started happening to me as well. I’ve reset preferences three times in the last week and turning off the Application frame is the only way I can see the documents. I’m still experimenting to see if I can make it work again, but I have been working only some in Illustrator and mostly in other programs this week. I’ll post back when I learn more.

I’m on High Sierra and CC 2019.

Might just be your preferences messed up.

Or your last computer restart too long ago.

So first try and just restart the computer.

If that doesn't help, try and reset preferences.

How to set preferences in Illustrator

The folder rename method is best, because you can revert it.
