Illustrator CC 2019 crashing when working with files ~500 MB in size

Hi all, I'm having an issue with Illustrator CC 2019. I'm running it on a Mac with OS X 10.13.6. I've been working with a few files that around 500 MB in size and Illustrator has been crashing at random when I work in these files. I don't have any problems in any other smaller files, just these particularly large ones. The crash report I'm getting points to that the generalized EXC_BAD_ACCESS exception, the full report can be read here Illustrator Error CC 2019 - Pastebin.com. My computer is a fairly new iMac Pro with a 3 GHz Xeon and 64 GB of RAM so I wouldn't think there are any hardware limitations I'm running into. Any advice on getting things behaving better with these large files would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi, if your Illustrator file has many levels, symbols, particular effects, etc. it is very likely that there are slowdowns. Furthermore, as suggested by others, when working with such large files, the advice is to have the file directly on the compoter instead of external media.

Hi Anthony,

Thanks for reaching out. We are sorry to hear that Illustrator is crashing repeatedly on few files. In addition to what Uwe has already mentioned, this behavior is often seen when the files are saved on network locations like Office Server/ Dropbox/ Google Drive/ or external HDD. If your files are saved on one of these locations please copy paste them to Desktop along with the linked files(if any) and let us know how it works.

If that doesn't help, would you mind sharing a sample file so that I can check how it works at my end? You can upload the file to the creative cloud and share a direct download link.

Regards,

Srishti

Hi Anthony,

are you making heavy use of Symbols with complex contents or large images?

I also see that my Illustrator CC 2019 is struggling with contents like that:

Most of it are 3D effects with mapped images ( embedded of course ).

Fortunately it never crashed, but redraw and reaction time can get very, very slow.

I'm on Windows 10.

Regards,
Uwe
