Hi Reene,

Thanks for reaching out. This is an expected behavior when the file is opened in latest versions. Illustrator also gives a warning while saving the files.

It might work in same cases, like this one with simple strokes.

Will it be possible for you to share the file with us? I can try opening it at my end.

Regards,

Srishti

In this file it already is an image. We would need the "Before" version.

Did you by chance use Gaussian blur in it? Or drop shadows?

When saving down you can't expect objects to stay editable in the same way that you can edit them. Some will always be expanded and some might even be converted to pixels, because the older version doesn't have the functions to edit the objects. So working with different versions on the same file is not at all recommended. When handing it back you need to edit the same file in your version and you might lose some objects after each edit. I hope you didn't overwrite the 2020 file.

Nope, i don't use any kind of effect at all in the said so vector-turned-image...

i don't give the 2020 version because i accidentally overwrite it, i wouldn't freak out and looking for a way if i still have the original 2020 version

Do you use Time Machine?

Did you by any chance save it in your Creative Cloud folder? (It has versioning)
