Question

Illustrator CC keeps crashing

Every time I try to save, save as, etc. Illustrator stops responding and I get the rainbow wheel of death. I've updated, restarted, tried reinstalling OOBE files. Not sure what to do next, but it's getting really frustrating. Any ideas welcome, thanks!

Currently running the most recent update of CC on a 2017 15" MacBook Pro (14.3) with 16GB RAM, 2.9 GHz processor and Radeon Pro 560 all on Sierra 10.12.6. I am working on PDF files in Illustrator that were originally generated by a CAD system and converted. Invariably, within several successful save attempts, I'll try to make a change or add a shape/text/image and it will crash without the usual "Illustrator has closed unexpectedly" crap. I've been using the Creative Suite over a decade now, and this has been the most unstable series yet. None of these files are being saved or altered over a network; each file has been transferred to my HD in the Documents folder.

As you can imagine, I've tried all of the usual workarounds: Illustrator being the only app open, Font app on/off, flattening artwork each time a new image is imported, running only in outline view, opening only one file at a time; all to no avail or improvement in catastrophic application failure. need to find a solution, but so far nothing from Adobe or Apple has been helpful.

Have you tried the simple act of resetting your Illustrator preferences?

To do so:

With Illustrator closed launch a Finder Window in column view and click on your home folder. With the Option Key pressed choose Library from the Finder Go Menu. Within the Library folder find the folder called Preferences and within it find the following two files and delete them: “Adobe Illustrator <Version #> Settings” (earlier versions of Illustrator might just say “Adobe Illustrator”) and “com.adobe.Illustrator.plist”. When Illustrator is next launched it will create new preference files and the program will be restored to its defaults.

After you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, it is a really good idea to create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.

Arianne,

Is there a printer correctly installed, connected, and turned on if it is physical printer (you may use Adobe PDF/Acrobat Distiller as the default printer with no need to have a printer turned on, obviously you will need to specify when you actually need to print on paper)?

Which version?

Which system?

Has Illustrator been installed properly?

Any third party plugins?

Is a printer connected and turned on?

All fonts checked and OK?

Where are you trying to save?

WHat's in the files?

Which file formt are you saving? Which options?
