I just updated illustrator CC to the newest 2017 version and every time I make a new text box it auto fills it with lorem ipsum. Is this an error? or is this default and something I can turn off. It sure seems like an error since it make zero sense to do this. If anyone has any information for me it would be greatly appreciated. i cannot work like this.
Hi jburkeillustration,
This is as intended like Mike said. However if you want, you can disable it in the preferences > Type > "Fill New Type Object With Placeholder Text" (See screenshot below)

That is an intended design by Adobe.

Thank you for your answer!
What is the reasoning? It just seems the opposite of efficient.

there's an option in Preferences > Type. Untick 'Fill New Type Objects with Placeholder Text'.
this is the first time i've seen this feature too. seems a bit half-assed; just the same repeating paragraph over and over. why couldn't they have used indesign's system?

You can also hit the delete key to get rid of the text.
Sorry our company decided not to upgrade to 2017 as no real major new features and many do not like how the magnify glass does not center when you do a frame sleet, if you have anything selected.

Yes, simple delete or just start typing gets rid of the placeholder text.
The Magnifying glass just works like before.
What's changed is the behaviour of the Cmd +/- (Ctrl +/-) when something is selected, it will zoom to the selected object or anchor point(s). But that's easy to avoid with the Space Cmd (or Ctrl for Win) to get the Magnify glass.

They will adding an option in the next release to disable zoom to selection, which should reinstate the ability to have a section ad marquee zoom. This has been publicly noted by Adobe staff, so am not breaking any confidentiality agreement.

This is very nice feature. Thank you.
Is there a character counter for this somewhere to be seen?
If is, does it count a space bar as a character?
Could it be added to the upper dock where one can see the font and stuff to be seen in all times when adjusting the text field?

There's no character count in Illustrator.
If so, it would likely be in the document info panel.
You could add a feature request here: http://illustrator.uservoice.com
Maybe there's a script.

Thank you for the reply, you got the idea I was searching for (like InDesign info-panel as you referred)

Maybe there is a script (from Carlos Canto).
Unfortunately I can get it to work:

Yeah, Ton. I looked at the posted version of the script and don't see linecount defined.

Thanks Carlos,
works perfect now!
Although I never count words or beans or meatballs (unlike my father who knew exactly how many little meatballs he made for the soup) it is a very usefull script for those who want to know.

My illustrator does not allow me to disable it. What should I do then?

Do you mean you can't see that checkbox in preferences, or that it has no effect on the appearance of lorem ipsum?

It means that I can see the box but I can't untick it. It acts as if it was greyed out...

I can't unclick it either. Very annoying. The check stays in the box. I am on Windows 7. Illustrator 2019.
