illustrator could only partially read this file

Hello, how are you? I had a video call today to present a project, and when I went to open the file, I encountered the message "Illustrator was only able to partially read this file." The file is on my C drive. I had been working on it and saved it (the file was already saved; every time I make changes, I go to File > Save to keep the updates). After it was fully saved, I shut down my computer. Later, when I came back and opened it, this message appeared. I clicked to open it anyway, and the entire file is completely blank. I tried recovering the file through data recovery, but the folder is EMPTY. I updated Illustrator, but the same error occurred. I tried opening it in Acrobat, and it says the file is damaged and cannot be recovered. However, when I go into Illustrator, I see a preview of the project in the Recent Files section... I followed some advice I found in the forum, but nothing worked. Is it possible to recover it?

Are you using the current general release build of Adobe Illustrator (version 29.2.1)? If so, I recommend installing a previous build alongside it, such as version 28.7.4 or the Beta version (29.4). I've been seeing similar issues with Adobe Illustrator .AI files exported from other applications, CorelDRAW in particular. If I open the Corel-generated .AI file in Illustrator 29.2.1 the file will fail to open. I'll see the same error box ("Illustrator could only partially read this file"). When the file opens the document will be empty. If I open it in Illustrator 28.7.4 the file will open successfully. When I save it again in that version of Illustrator the file will then open successfully in version 29.2.1.

I usually see this bug when there is live editable type in the exported .AI file. If all the type is converted to outlines it will open properly outright in Illustrator 29.2.1. If your Illustrator file has been created entirely using Illustrator and not any additional applications it makes me wonder if there could be some sort of issue with fonts installed in the computer.

Hi Bobby, I was using version 28.7.1. I read somewhere here that updating to the latest version might help my project open, but that wasn't the case. Should I go back to a previous version?

If you were doing all the editing work in Illustrator a previous whole version (such as 27 or earlier) might not be able to open the file. If the file isn't really damaged it might be possible for the beta version to open it.

Can you try to open the Illustrator file in Adobe Acrobat to see if the file will display? I'll usually just drag .AI files into the Acrobat window to see if they'll open. Doing this can be a decent trouble shooting step to see if a file is actually damaged.
