Illustrator crashes every single time I use direct selection.

How do I fix this? It is effectively 100% of the time it crashes. I have restarted my computer multiple times, and reinstalled illustrator on my computer. It happens for every file I open.

Hi @benjamin_8630,

I'm sorry to hear that Illustrator keeps crashing when you use the Direct Selection tool. Could you please confirm the exact version of Illustrator and your operating system? Also, let me know if the crash happens in a new blank file or only with specific ones.

Please try resetting Illustrator preferences (Ref: https://adobe.ly/4hbgdhY) and then relaunch the app to test again. If it still crashes, check whether you see the Adobe Crash Reporter dialog when it happens. If yes, please submit the report and share the email address used via DM so I can have the team review the logs (Ref: https://adobe.ly/4qyTtwS).

Additionally, try the troubleshooting steps mentioned here to rule out system-level causes: https://adobe.ly/4qldxTe.

Looking forward to your update.

I believe it only happens with certain files that uses object on path. When I try to edit the points on specific assets using direct selection it crashes. I am on the newest version of illustrator (29.8.2) and I am on the latest update of Windows 11.

Hello @benjamin_8630,

Thanks for confirming. If the issue occurs only with certain files, try copying the layers/objects from that document to a new one and let us know if the problem persists. Additionally, try moving the files to a local directory on your computer if they are on a network/removable drive or a cloud-synced folder like Google Drive/Dropbox/etc. and share your observations.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
