I’m experiencing an issue with Adobe Illustrator where I cannot copy anything. Both Ctrl+C and right-click > Copy cause the software to crash immediately. This has been happening repeatedly throughout the day.
Could you please advise on the cause and any possible solution? It’s really frustrating that Illustrator can’t handle such a basic function like copying without crashing.
Hello @Nadia37972677f0tk,
We have received reports from several customers that the latest Windows Defender security intelligence update - 1.435.148.0 has potentially fixed this issue.
Could you try installing the update and letting us know if it helps?

I’m hoping someone from the Adobe development team can respond, but if anyone else has experienced this issue, please share your solution.
I’ve already tried uninstalling and reinstalling Illustrator, but the problem persists.
Thank you in advance!

Hello @Boon23853857gxj4,
I'm sorry to hear about your experience. Could you confirm the version of the OS/Illustrator installed and if this started happening after a recent software/hardware change, so we can better assist you?
Also, try to run Illustrator after rebooting your computer in Safe Mode (Windows / macOS) and let us know if it helps.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

I’m using Illustrator 29.6.1 on Windows, and I’m facing a serious issue.
Whenever I copy any object, even a simple shape, Illustrator immediately crashes and closes itself. I have an urgent project to complete. Could you please advise how to fix this as soon as possible?

Windows 11 Business Ver. 10.0.26100 Build 26100 here. My IT department has confirmed Safe Mode does allow Ctrl+C to work, but obviously not a feasible option. Thanks for the Alt+Drag in Window Mode work around; While this is an extreme pain, this is the only real option to copy from document to document.

We are the same build for Win 11, I've attempted 3 prior versions of Illustrator to no avail. This is a very simple function, why am I paying for Illustrator if it's virtually not usable?

I am facing the same issue. Tried rolling back to a previous version as well and it didn't help. Copying anything in illustrator causes the app to crash. I am not in a position to try putting it into safe mode.

What kind of object(s) are you trying to copy to the clipboard? Is it something big and/or complex? Or is any kind of object causing Illustrator to crash?
Yesterday I was dealing with a stubborn issue with some customer provided large format artwork. I was trying to copy it to the clipboard to paste it into another letter-sized document at a smaller size/scale. I'd resize it prior to copying, but when I pressed Ctrl+C the application would hang. I re-booted the computer and tried the same steps again in Illustrator; the app froze again. After re-lauching Illustrator I ran the artwork through the Vector First Aid plugin to clean up any technical problems. Then I copied the artwork to the clipboard and pasted it into the other document at full size and then scaled down the artwork to the desired size there.

Despite the improvements in Illustrator 29.7, the application still crashes consistently when copying any content from the artboard. This issue is severely impacting productivity and needs to be addressed as a priority. A prompt resolution would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks & regards

The workaround is to uncheck this feature "Paste Remembers Layers". So please open an illustrator document, go to the Layers section on the right, click on the hamburger. Uncheck the feature, then test copy/paste, and thank me in the morning.

I'm on a Microsoft Surface Studio, running Win 11.
New problem came up today - happening with current 29.6.1 but also tried rolling back to v28.
Reinstalled, deleted prefs, ran Windows update, etc...
Issue is: when I cut or copy, whether key command or using menu, I get a brief busy hourglass, then Illustrator quits or freezes.
The problem goes away when I boot Windows into Safe Mode.
I am not using any clipboard programs or any Illustrator extensions or plug ins.
