ILLUSTRATOR CRASHING WHEN OPENING DWG FILES

Hi everyone,

My Illustrator has been crashing whenever I try to open DWG files from AutoCAD. I have not had this issue before and it works on the 26.0 version. However, in that version, it would freeze whenever I would try to close the program. In all other versions beyond that, the file will not open at all. Is there any way to remedy this? I am currently an architecture student, so deadlines are quickly approaching.

Sincerely,

Andrew

Try having it saved as 2000. Not sure if there are issues using the 2010 format.

I have tried to save it in all versions, and unfortunately, the results are the same.

It was working fine for the past few versions of illustrator. I think when the 2023 version rolled out, issues started occurring with both the new and the old apps.

Hello @ahthai,

We understand how frustrating it can be to experience crashes. If you're having trouble with specific DWG files in Illustrator, kindly share them here (https://community.adobe.com/t5/illustrator-discussions/share-your-files-in-6-simple-steps/td-p/12967...) so we can check it on our end.

If not, please follow the steps in this help article (https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/fix-crash-on-launch-issues.html) and let us know your observations. Also, kindly share the crash report using the steps in this article (https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/crash-next-steps.html) and use the same email account as your community account for quick tracking. We appreciate your time and efforts in resolving this issue.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

Anubhav

It doesn't seem that Adobe supports uploading DWG files.

And referring to the crash report, when the app crashes, the window does not show up.

Hello @ahthai,

Thanks for sharing the details. Kindly follow the steps shared in this community post (https://community.adobe.com/t5/illustrator-discussions/share-your-files-in-6-simple-steps/td-p/12967...) to share a link to a sample DWG file. Also, if you don't see the Crash Reporter dialog appear, you may have selected an option to not show the dialog. Follow these steps to set the preference to Always Show This Dialog:

macOS

  1. Cmd+click the Illustrator app icon and choose Show Package Contents.
  2. Select Contents > Frameworks > AdobeCrashReporter.framework.
  3. Cmd+click the alias named AdobeCrashReporter and select Show Original.
  4. Double-click Adobe Crash Reporter (Red A app icon, not the black AdobeCrashReporter UNIX executable file).
  5. Choose Always Show This Dialog and click Done.

Windows

  1. Open Start
  2. Search for "Command Prompt" and launch it
  3. Enter the following command:
    • REG ADD HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\CommonFiles\CRLog /v "Never Ask" /t REG_SZ /d 0
  4. Press the Enter key
  5. If asked â€œValue Never Ask exists, overwrite(Yes/No)?" choose Yes

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards

This maybe be redundant in 2023 - it's been a long time since I did any of this and I'm sure CAD and DWG have significantly moved on - but there used to be a "purge" or "clean-up" process prior to exporting...

I had the exact same issue today. After spending 2 hours trying to fix it, I narrowed it down to a single polyline in my dwg-file causing Illustrator to crash without fail. I exploded the polyline, and Illustrator imported the dwg file with no issue.

Very wierd, but if anyone else has this issue try exploding your shapes and polylines before opening the dwg-file.

Alternatively if some other geometry is causing the crash back up your file and use QSELECT (autocad) to delete each type of object one at a time until you can open it.

I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing crashes when opening DWG files. I understand how frustrating this can be. Could you please share more details about what exactly happened? Do you see any error messages, or does Illustrator simply crash without warning? Also, please confirm the OS & Ai version and share your system specs (RAM, CPU, GPU).

Additionally, could you please share the crash report using the steps in this article and use the same email account as your community account for quick tracking? We appreciate your time and efforts in resolving this issue.

Thank you,
