Illustrator CS4 and El Capitan: Can't paste images into Illustrator

Question

I've had Illustrator CS4 on my mac working smoothly for some time, but recently upgraded my OS to El Capitan. Now when I try to copy/paste an image from Chrome or ImageJ into Illustrator I get the following error: "QuickTime and a decompressor are needed to see this picture." Any suggestions on how to solve this problem? (I have QuickTime Player 10.4 installed.) Thanks!

You will need to upgrade your illustrator, or downgrade your OS to

Mac OS X v10.4.11–10.5.4

System requirements | Adobe Illustrator

OS 10.6.8 might work as that was a good one to stick with.
