Illustrator doesn't change fonts

Hello there. Came accross the problem: Illustrator doesn't change fonts, showing the text in default font every time. I can see the list of fonts, the preview of the text in this font, but when I click at the font, happens nothing — the text is in the default font 😕😕
It happens with every font, so the problem is most probably not in the particular font.

Using the latest version of Illustrator (28.1) on MacOS Sonoma 14.2

Does your computer have any other applications running at the same time as Illustrator? Is there a third party font management app installed?

I also have the same problem when using a university PC (its data are automatically deleted after each shutdown). There are no other software opened at the time. Then when I try using my own laptop, the problem still there; I can't select Adobe online fonts (it always immediately reverted to default font when clicked although I can see the font preview on my selected text)
