Illustrator Errors on Open and Crashing

First of all, I'd hoped the new update would have fixed the issue I have with TypeKit fonts not loading but, alas, it's still a problem so that's one that needs a LOT of work.

Secondly, since updating to CC2018 yesterday, I've had nothing but problems with AI. When I open an AI file, I get 2 errors EVERY time:

*The operation cannot complete because of an unknown error [PARM]

Once I click "Ok" on that one, I get this one:

*An error occurred while processing the appearance of an object.

Next, my file will open but so far this morning in my 1 hour of being on AI, I've had to send a crash report, force quit AI (not the same instance) because it just froze up, close it because typekit fonts wouldn't sync and force quit.

I've restarted my computer already. I launched CC so the fonts will load, which is really annoying to have to do, and I've now opened it again. The result is very little work, a great amount of frustration and I'm quickly getting behind because I need to keep restarting either AI or my entire system.

At this point, I'm ready to revert back to an older version, if I can, just so I can get some work done today.

I don't have any plugins or addons or whatever - wouldn't know how to do that if I tried.

For anyone who may come along and read this later, the resolution to this problem was to create a new file and copy/paste all of my drawing into it. I deleted the old file.

It didn't seem to be my preferences, which were getting reset by following Bill's instructions above. It definitely wasn't a printer issue either - I did go back to just an Adobe Printer but all that did was make it so that now, I have to set up printers again.

Creating the new file resolved the messages I was receiving when I opened the file (other files did not throw these errors so that's how I knew, finally, that it was just that file).

Secondly, I rolled back from Illustrator 2018 to 2017 because, even after creating a new file, Illustrator kept crashing on me - 7-8 times before I deleted it and installed 2017 again. I've had no crashes since rolling back. There was no rhyme or reason to the crash. Sometimes I would do one or two strokes of my graphic tablet pen and it would crash. Other times, I'd work for a half hour before it would crash. I got really good at a rhythm of "stroke - save - stroke - save" just to preserve.

I'm hopeful that Illustrator will fix whatever is going on. I actually liked how 2018 interacted with my graphic tablet/pen. It was somehow more responsive but I can't waste another day reporting crashes and being frustrated. It will be a while before I try 2018 again.

So, on a whim, I opened a different AI file...no errors. I think my drawing file is corrupted...

I'm going to open a new file and copy/paste the current drawing into a new file...

I really appreciate your help today - if you have any other insight or ideas about what I might have done to cause this I'm all ears.

So, before you posted this, I just uninstalled EVERYTHING Adobe. I then went in and deleted all of those files and reinstalled Illustrator.

It's still doing it...

I did a Google search and came up with Windows errors but it turned out to be something wanting to sell me software so I need to try again I guess. It hasn't crashed on me...yet since I reinstalled it and cleaned out all of the old stuff but those errors are still there when I open a file.

When you installed the new version of Illustrator did you delete the preference files from previous versions? I've seen that many issues (not all) that people have been having with the new version is a result of using old preference files. Try deleting them and, hopefully, the new version will run better for you.

To do so:

For Macintosh Users: With Illustrator closed launch a Finder Window in column view and click on your home folder. With the Option Key pressed choose Library from the Finder Go Menu. Within the Library folder find the folder called Preferences and within it find the following two files and delete them: “Adobe Illustrator <Version #> Settings” (earlier versions of Illustrator might just say “Adobe Illustrator”) and “com.adobe.Illustrator.plist”. When Illustrator is next launched it will create new preference files and the program will be restored to its defaults.

After you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, it is a really good idea to create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.

For Windows Users: Hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift when launching Illustrator and respond affirmatively when asked if you want to reset.

If the Ctrl + Alt + Shift method does not work (I've had a couple of reports from people who said that CC 2018 was not resetting with this method) then you can delete the preferences manually. On Windows 7 and above the preference files are hidden. To find them go to the Control Panel and open Folder Options and then click the View tab. Then select “Show hidden files and folders” or “Show hidden files, folders or drive options” in Advanced Settings. Then delete (or rename) the folder at the end of this path: C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator [version number]\ Settings\<Language>. Make sure that Illustrator is closed when you do this. When you relaunch the program it will create new preference files and the program will be at its default settings.

Windows 10, in their infinite wisdom, has "Settings" (no longer control panel) and I don't see any "folder options" in there...you have to search for "Folders" and that option will appear...just FYI (I mean really, why keep things the same so people can find them...)

Having said that, mine were already unhidden so when I follow your path...this is what I see -

The Control Panel is still actually in Windows 10 you just have to do a search to find it. Be that as it may if you go inside of Adobe Illustrator 22.0 that you show in your screen shot you should see a folder called Settings and then inside that a folder with the Language you are using. The Language folder is the one that should be deleted. However, your post Number 9 does sound like the keyboard command has been working to reset your preferences (switching the interface color is an indication of that) so it would seem that this is not a preference issue although you may want to still try manually deleting them (as well as the ones for version 21) just to make sure.

I don't own a printer.

Files are located in my "Documents" folder, where they've always been.

Don't know about resetting preferences... or how that impacts a bad launch of a file. I did look at my preferences because the open window and user interface got really small but I didn't see anything that I could change to fix that and I didn't change anything else in there either.
