Illustrator / Export / Export to Screens > SVG

I love the "export to screens feature". However, is there a way to control SVG exports beyond the default setting? My issue is that the feature trims my SVG to the artwork, not to the size of the artboard. Please advise. Without further controls, this feature is isn't very useful. Thanks in advance.

There is an Artboards option in the Export for Screens, does that work for you?

Hi Ton!

Thank you for the response!

For context, here's what I'm doing...

1) I'm creating shape layers in photoshop (there are about 30 in each of my psd files.)

2) I then open that psd in Illustrator. When I do this, each shape layer from the psd gets place on a separate layer (see screenshot).

3) I then grab all of the artwork/layers and drag them into the 'asset export panel' and export all of the layers as SVGs. Which trims each shape (grrr) But i don't see an 'artboard option' during this process as you mentioned in your reply? See screenshot of what my psd looks like when open in Illustrator.

My goal is to have have each svg retain it's placement on the original size of the artboard/layer (as it would if I were saving each layer as an SVG.) I'm using the latest version of Illustrator 2022.

You could try this script with the Trim Edges option unchecked:

Thanks again for the response! I've been using the multiexporter script for years but just recently it's been producing issues that I'm not skilled enough to fix. It was the holy grail for me but he hasn't supported updates in a long time. What happens now with the script is that - while it doesn't trim the art - the artwork moves slightly on the canvas when exported and unfortunately, that is very problematic for my end purpose. Which is why I've been on a hunt for a new solution! Ugh...

I am afraid I cannot help you with that. Maybe someone else knows another script or how to add an invisible layer sized rectangle grouped with the layer content.

File > Export > Export for Screens should use the artboard size (giving extra space around the art), which is different than File > Export > Export As (which trims the art). Is that not what you're seeing? Which version of Illustrator are you using?

Hi there! Thank you so much for the response. For context, here's what I'm doing...

1) I'm creating shape layers in photoshop (there are about 30 in each of my psd files.)

2) I then open that psd in Illustrator which puts each shape on a separate illustrator layer (see attached screenshot of how my psd looks when it's opened in illustrator).

3) I then grab all of the artwork/layers and drag them into the 'asset export panel' and export all of the layers as SVGs. Which trims each shape (grrr)

My goal is to have have each svg retain it's placement on the original size of the artboard/layer (as it would if I were saving each layer as an SVG.) What I'm trying to avoid having to do a 'save as svg" for each layer (shoot me). 🙂 Any advice on how could do this differently to achieve my goal? I'm using the latest version of Illustrator 2022.

Is there a way I can export for screens with scripts? I need to export as an SVG but I can't find nothing like that. I want the hidden containers to be removed from the file as the "Export" option does.
