Illustrator file wont save 'Unknown error'

Hi,

when I try to save my file 'an unknown error has occured' comes up.

I've been working on it (and saving it) for hours and its about 20 MB, has three artboards with vectors and print swatches.

the last thing i did was draw a shape using the zip zag effect. and paste a few jpegs into it.

I deleted the jpegs and expanded the shape i drew incase the effect was what caused it to freak. but the file still wont save. it wont save as a new document either. I have no locked or hidden layers (to my knowledge).

At first i couldn't copy all my work in to a new document 'the artwork will fall off the artboard' or something so i had to copy over each shape into a new file. The new file has saved THANK GOD...

Why has this happened?

Hmm my laptop did crash about 6 hours before, and the file was open. Maybe thats what caused it to corrupt.

I haven't had the problem since, and have been working in the same ways, and with same preferences etc.

Thanks

WHich system, which version?

Which file format, which options?

Where did you try to save the file?

Any third party plugins?

Text?

Any Font management?

Generally: this might just happen (corruption due to whatever).

"Saving as" under a new file name from time to time is a good measure. Just in case something goes wrong.

Saving as will consolidate the file. And saving different versions will allow you to go back to a previous state of work.
