Illustrator freezes while switching from another window when there are unlinked files

Illustrator freezes while returning from another window.
Happens only when there are unlinked files in Illustrator document. It takes about 20 seconds to resume work. I guess it is updating unlinked stuff but not finding anything. It is terrible.

It has been so for years now. Every windows computer. Every Illustrator CC version.
Can I turn off automatic link check thing?
I it just one of the myriad of unfixed annoyances that Illustrator seems to gather through the years.

Solution:
Preferences -> File handling and clipboard -> Update links (changed this from "ask when modified" to "manual")

Well this last solution seems to work only when links window is closed 😞 It still seems to check all the missing links for some reason. Can I disable it somehow?
