Question

Illustrator gets stuck while trying to print

When I go to print a file from Illustrator, an odd print menu pops up and goes away quickly, but after that the program is stuck and I cant even close out of it. I have to restart me computer to get it back to normal. If I am not printing, it works fine. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hello @Boondoxx,

Sorry to hear about this experience. Would you mind trying to remove and reinstall the printer drivers, restarting your computer, and checking if it helps?

Also, try exporting your work from Illustrator as a JPEG and printing from a different application, and sharing your observations.

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

Anubhav

So It looks like the email I sent did not come through. I will email the images to myself and attach via my computer instead of my phone. To your point, I have reset muy computer, but not the print  driver, as I have other programs that I need to be able to print from and reinstalling the driver is quite a process. So I want that to be my absolut last option. I have printed from several different programs on my compjuter and they have all work just fine.

Hello @Boondoxx,

Thanks for confirming that. Would you mind trying to run Illustrator under a different administrator account (Windows / macOS) and checking if it helps?

If it works, kindly try resetting preferences manually and check if that helps resolve the issue:
For macOS
• Close all Adobe applications.
• Go to the following locations
• ~/Library/Caches
• ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe
• ~/Library/Preferences
• Rename Adobe Illustrator, com.adobe.illustrator and Adobe Illustrator 27 Settings folders to Adobe Illustrator.old, com.adobe.illustrator.old and Adobe Illustrator 27 Settings.old
• Launch Illustrator from the Creative Cloud.

Note: Location starting with this "~" sign indicates the User Library, which is hidden. So, you need to copy & paste the exact path in spotlight search or from Finder Menu > Go > Go to Folder > Paste the location in the dialog box like this:

For Windows
- Close all Adobe applications.
- Go to Location C:\Users\%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe
- Rename Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Illustrator 27 Settings folders to Adobe Illustrator.old and Adobe Illustrator - 27 Settings.old

Disclaimer: Please note that renaming preferences folders will remove all the custom settings, and Illustrator will launch with default settings. You can also save a backup of the folders in case you want to. The location is mentioned above.

Looking forward to your response.

Regards.

So my Illustrator CC is up to date, and I am on a windows computer.  The printer I use is a Brother GT-381 DTG printer, that I have been using for years. I literally printed several things on Monday, and now its not working.

On Monday you used Illustrator for printing and did not change anything since then?

Is there anything different in the file? Like maybe a freeform gradient in it or some 3D? Would it help to rasterize or expand some items?
