Illustrator opens up vector images as a color fill

I am super confused. I am a uniform designer and I am often importing vectored images. Recently I have had certain vectors being imported and instantly becoming a color swatch compared to an image. I am so confused. I cannot change the color, and the image fills up the entire space. No clipping mask or compund path involved. Have I selected a setting that could be affecting this?
