Illustrator performance issues on Windows 10

Hi, I own a PC i7-8700 skt1151 - MotherBoard MSI B360M PRO-VD - Ram HYPERX DDR4 16GB (2x8GB) 2666MHZ XPG GAMMIX D30 - Video Card Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti with GeForce Game Ready Driver 431.60 - SSD KINGSTONE SA400-240GB. Often, during the processing of an image, illustrator slows down visibly, until it crashes a few times. The machine does not perceive hardware problems or suffering due to the quantity of ram or cpu. How could I identify the problem?

Hi, I noticed that the problem of slowing down (sometimes crashing) is strictly connected to the use of vector downloaded online, compared to other types of files used (such as Png files). How could I identify the problem?

Raster images and effects can slow Illustrator down significantly. Raster effects applied at a high resolution can be especially draining. Here are some ways to keep Illustrator files small (so they load and save faster) and speed up the program.

    • Make sure any imported Images are linked, not embedded and not pasted.
    • Save with PDF Compatibility disabled. This can dramatically shrink the file size, but the Illustrator file cannot be used in other programs. If can’t be placed in InDesign or rasterized in Photoshop. You can resale with the option enabled later.
    • Lower the resolution for raster effects (Effects > Document Raster Effects). Effects will still render, but at a lower resolution requiring less processing. Bump it back up to the desired resolution when saving the final file or proofing.
    • Hiding layers or hiding effects in the Appearance panel won’t save any time. Hidden objects are effects are still processed for some reason.
    • See if anything here helps. I use a Mac so I can’t test any Windows specific performance tips.

Hi, I have run your suggestions, the speed has not improved much unfortunately, also because the file, at the end of the work, must be saved with pdf compatibility because it must be sent abroad by other suppliers that carry out the printing it.

You can work on the file with PDF compatibility off to same time and space. Save a full PDF compatible file only when you have a final.final.final.ai file for printing.

    Hi Carmine,

Thanks for reaching out. As per your query, Illustrator slows down while loading an image. This is not a usual experience with Illustrator. Let us help you figure this out. I would request if you can share a few more details like:

    • OS and version of Illustrator
    • When you say "processing of an image", do you mean opening/placing the image? Does the image show distorted initially?
    • Is the issue related to a specific document(s)/asset(s)? If yes, could you please share the document(s)/asset(s) with us? You can upload it to the creative cloud and share the download link.
    • Where the files are saved (Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System /External HDD)?
    • When did this start happening? Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates or web extensions installed recently.
    • Does resetting Illustrator Preferences (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/illustrator/using/setting-preferences.html) help resolve the issue? Please do take a backup of the same before trashing them and share it with us. Location is mentioned in the article.

    Regards,

    Srishti

Hello and thanks for the reply:

    S.O. Windfows 10 Pro "latest version" 1903

The problem OFTEN IS THEREFORE DURING SAVING OR DURING A PROCESSING, for example, during an unpacking, or during a copy and paste of an image.

The images are processed and saved on the same SSD, where the s.o.

The problem has always existed since we started this new machine (about 3 months). Slowly, it gets worse.

How can I backup preferences and perform a restore?

Thanks for sharing the details. Please try the following steps and let us know if that helps:

    1. Reset Preferences manually:

    • For Windows
    • Close all Adobe applications.
    • Go to Location : C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Adobe
    • Rename Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Illustrator 23 Settings folders to Adobe Illustrator.old and Adobe Illustrator 23 Settings folders.old
    • Launch Illustrator from CC.

This will save all the existing settings in old folders and Illustrator will launch with default settings.

    2. You can also try the steps shared here: Improve Illustrator performance on Windows.

    3. If that doesn't help, log in to Safe Mode with networking (How to Boot into Safe Mode On Windows 10 (3 Ways) - YouTube ) and check how Illustrator works there. If it works fine there, then there could be some third party service which is conflicting. Try to perform clean boot (How To Clean Boot In Windows 10 For Troubleshooting - YouTube ) and let us know if that helps.

    Looking forward to your response!
