Question

Illustrator/Roland CMYK numbers

As many know, the specific CMYK numbers for cut lines is VERY specific from Roland (V3 540).

I am a teacher and my class just started designing a 4"x4" full color sticker with a perf line and a cutline.  They copy the color number from Roland exactly.  Then upon transferring that file from their iMac to the PC running the Roland Versaworks, the cut lines are visible, but not cutting.  Upon further review, the files that were transferred are put back in Illustrator and the cut line color numbers are all rounded up.  Therefore Roland does not recognize those colors as cut lines.

I have searched a few forums with no luck.  Why are these color numbers being rounded?

Thanks on behalf of 64 high school students eager to play with the 540!

Are the students' files RGB or CMYK? They must be CMYK before you enter the numbers.

Hi @Paul_Heida0427,

Thanks for reaching out! This sounds frustrating, especially with so many students eager to use the Roland V3 540.

Could you confirm the version of Illustrator you're using? Newer or older versions may handle spot color values differently during file transfers.

To ensure Roland Versaworks recognizes the cut lines:

1. The cut line must be a spot color, not a process CMYK color. Double-check it remains a named spot color (like "CutContour") in Illustrator.

2. Ensure the CMYK values (e.g., 0/100/0/0) are not being converted or altered when saving/transferring files. Save as PDF/X-1a or EPS for better compatibility.

3. In Illustrator, go to Edit > Color Settings, and ensure the color profiles aren’t automatically converting spot colors to process during export.

4. Verify how the files are being transferred. Sometimes, moving files via external drives can affect metadata. Try saving/exporting directly to the PC network or cloud if possible.

Let me know if the cut line issue persists after these steps, and we’ll troubleshoot further!

Thanks,
