Illustrator scaling problem

New Here ,
Apr 28, 2008 Apr 28, 2008
I'm trying to manually scale an object. The scaling tool in the toolbar works fine, but there seems to be some weird preference set that won't allow me to uniformly scale manually. Even though I'm holding down the shift key, there is no uniform constraint.

Hiya,

Not sure if i understand what you're asking. Here goes.

In the toolbar, between the W and H fields where you might be entering a dimension is what looks like a link of a chain.

If it does not have a line on either side of it, the scale will be disproportionate (one field will change but not the other.

If it has a line on either side, the scaling will be "constrained".

Clicking on it toggles those states.

HTH, otherwise someone more knowledgeable will have to chime in,
BobD

Holding shift while dragging a handle will also keep the object proportional while scaling.

This problem has come up several times over the last few years.

If you hold the shift key and it doesn't constrain the shape, it can be caused by another programme you have running in the background. The main offender used to be Entourage, but it could be many other things.

Turn off any non-Adobe apps and see if the problem goes away

You have to turn on the function of bounding box:
View - Show Bounding Box
then you will have a box around the object when you click on it and you can scale it
if the option is on, open the:
Illustrator - Preferences - General and mark the option Use Preview Bounds
I hope it was useful
Have a nice day everyone!

That's only if she's using the bounding box to resize, but she said she was using the scale tool from the palette. She doesn't need to "show bounding box" with that tool.

I'm seeing this same problem on a client's computer as well. Can't shift-scale items manually by grabbing a handle. The problem goes away (for a week after my previous visit) when deleting the Ill. prefs file, but appears to have returned. Running disk utilities now and going try reinstall in Ill.

Specifics:
Mac Pro 3.0 Ghz w/13GB RAM
Mac OS X 10.4.11
Ill. CS3 13.02

Try to press and hold Shift key BEFORE object corner selection for dragging.

This is definitely a problem with Entourage, Quicken and a certain other program that I do not recall you also might have to update your Microsoft software.

Same issue I was facing and got the solution when I closed the Google Chrome brwoser where I had oppened almost 30 to 35 windows in tabs and right after closing that it got fixed.

BTW. if above trick does not work for you, you can try by closing all the other brwosers or software to work correctly the illustrator.

Thanks,

M khalid

Show the problem with a screenshot.

And you might want to start a new thread so everyone knows it is a different though related issue.

Is the box for Scale Strokes & Effects checked in either Preferences or the Scale dialog? You don't have to expand the strokes to fills for them to scale properly.

Hi, Thanks for the response.

I checked the box "Scale Stroke and Effects" and the problem still occurs. The top image

Is the one that i've scaled and you can see how its deformed. Any ideas.
