illustrator suddenly adding artboard number as well as suffix

Explorer ,
Feb 17, 2025 Feb 17, 2025

Today illustrator has started adding the artboard number as well as the suffix, which is what I named the artboard. It used to only add the thing I deliberately called it. Now I"m having to manually delete the numbers at the end again.

How do I make it stop adding them?

Hello @screen1234why,

Would you mind sharing more details, like the version of the OS/Illustrator and screenshots of the export settings and the file names, so I can better assist you?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

i have the same issue.  i simply select the artboards I want to export as PNG and click suffix.  i have already named the artboards. this has worked flawlessly until today.

Hi @defaultgln5060vc33t,

To avoid this, please double-check that each artboard has a unique name in the Artboards panel (you can find this under Window > Artboards and double-click the names to edit them if needed). Then, go to File > Export > Export for Screens, make sure you're exporting from the Artboards tab, and leave the suffix field empty or set it manually as needed. Illustrator usually appends artboard numbers only when names are missing or duplicated.

If you've already done that and the issue persists, please let me know the version of Illustrator and your OS, and if possible, share a short screen recording or the export process showing the workflow. I'll check it with the team and get back to you.

Looking forward to your update!

Abhishek

Works sometimes but newer files get artboard numbers for regardless of
being named.

Hi @defaultgln5060vc33t,

Could you please provide more information, such as the specific version of your OS and Illustrator? Additionally, a brief screen recording of your workflow and the issue would be helpful, so I can attempt to replicate it on my end.

I look forward to your response.

I'll answer for mine - always update illustrator, and work on a mac, usually the most up to date OS. THis has happened across several updates though, so it's not the version of illustrator or OS

Hi @screen1234why,

Thanks for sharing. I completely understand how frustrating it must be when things work inconsistently, especially when you've done everything right like naming your artboards properly.

To help us investigate this further, could you please share the exact version of Illustrator you're currently using and your macOS version? Also, if possible, a quick screen recording of the export workflow where the issue occurs would be really helpful. If you're comfortable, please also share a sample file where this happens. This will allow us to test it internally and better understand what might be triggering the issue.

Looking forward to your update.

Abhishek

On a current Os mac and current Ai.  Updated after this started happening and didn't help.  I’m noticing older files are functioning as before but new files are adding artboard numbers.  The artboards are named and the suffix button is checked.  Same flow as 10 years before and suddenly it's not working

Hello @defaultgln5060vc33t,

Thanks for sharing the details. Could you kindly confirm the exact version of the OS/Illustrator, share a public link to a sample file after uploading it to Dropbox/Google Drive/etc., and a screen recording of your exact workflow and the problem (https://adobe.ly/4k2fXmi), so we can investigate this further?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Same for me - I always name artboards. Usually it works. Sometimes Illustrator just decides to add numbers as well.
