Illustrator - Text Box Issue

Hoping someone has an answer or fix for what is happening to me involving text boxes. Essentially the text bounding box is acting much bigger then it actually appears, causing issues clicking on anything in the area.

 

I took this video to show what I am talking about:

And this screenshot shows the text settings + show what seems to be the issue. Is there a way to shrink the ghost space above and below the text?

As long as your type is live type, the true Bounding Box of the font includes the descender area designed into the font, whether you are using dscending letter or not. (same with the ascender area above)

Example, this is the designed area of a letter "S".

You could always change your Type selection preference to Select by Path only, but that can be harder to deal with.
